The Optical Comparator screen is glass with a sand-blasted or chemically etched back side. The light is projected onto this surface and because it is rough and foggy the light does not cause a blinding glare. The silhouette is accurately projected on the screen for the eye to see.
Screens have thin lines etched into them that provide the comparison of part features to screen features. The images above are indicative standard screens on comparators.
The example below shows a complex screen and the silhouette of a sample part. This screen has a grid of etched features to measure horizontal and vertical distances, angular features, as well as radius features.
