Dissimilar materials

The theory of dissimilar materials is a low-friction wear-and-replace design concept. Most often this is seen where bronze bushing are provided as a bearing for a rotating steel shaft. This design serves two purposes:

1) dissimilar materials provide less friction (steel shaft with steel bushing would gall very quickly)

2) the softer material will wear at a predetermined rate and can be easily replaced.
